If you are new to crocheting I highly recommend that you use a stitch marker (sm). The sm is placed on the first stitch in each row (not the chain).
The chain at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch.
The first stitch in your row is worked in the same stitch as the sl st.
Make sure the number of stitches in each row matches the totals provided.
